Kegati Aquaculture Research Center was initiated in 1992 to undertake a multidisciplinary research approach aimed at enhancing high and lowland altitude aquaculture development. The center is situated on the Kisii highlands (Kisii County) overreaching the Lake Victoria Basin, south west Kenya, about 300km from Nairobi. Situated at an altitude of 1700 metres above sea level and latitude 00°42″S; 034°47″E, the Center receives year round long (March to June) and short rains (October to November) rains with an annual rainfall of about 1800mm.
The center undertakes aquaculture research with a major focus on introduction of commercially important lake basin indigenous fish species, fish seed and feed production, affordable climate smart culture systems and technologies, fish health and nutrition and environmental monitoring and management.
Scientists at the center are engaged in various on-station and on-farm demand driven research activities through a participatory action approach. Among the activities are provision of Nile tilapia improved seed and technical advice to farmers.

The scientists are also currently engaged in monitoring all aspects of cage culture initiatives in Lake Victoria. KMFRI recommends investors to consult before investing in cage fish farming to avoid investment losses, ecological contamination and resource conflicts.
