Developing Technologies for Improving Aquaculture Productivity in Kenya (DTIPAK)

Fish seed production in Kenya is based on a limited number of warm water species primarily Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus). However, the natural diversity and diminishing stocks of capture fisheries provide an ongoing incentive to diversify and farm new fish species. Though there is an ever-increasing number of species being farmed in aquaculture, further diversification is constrained by limitations in technology, profitability, regulations, sustainability and enabling environments. KMFRI has identified three main strategies for aquaculture diversification: 1) increase the number of species being farmed; 2) increase the diversity within currently farmed species by developing new strains 3 domestication and captive breeding of indigenous species within their catchment zones. The main species identified for diversification include Labeo victorianus (ningu), Tilapia jipe and Tilapia baringoensis.  These interventions seek to diversify species for aquaculture in Kenya for improved livelihood, environmental integrity and food security.
