Prof. Peninah Aloo-Obudho Appointed to Head KMFRI Board
The Minister for Fisheries Development, Hon. Dr. Amerson Jefwa Kingi has re-appointed Prof. Peninah Aloo-Obudho to be the Chairperson of the Board of Management of the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) for a period of three more years. The Minister announced the appointment in Kenya Gazette CXIII – No. 59 of July 1, 2011.
The Minister also appointed the following six members of the Board for the next three years: Prof. James H. P. Kahindi, Prof. Evans Aoso, Dr. Mary Ciambaka Mwiandi, Dr. Ahmed Yassin, Mr. Bernard Mubinja Wamalwa and Dr. John Mmari.

4th National Conference to disseminate results of on-going research funded by the Kenya Government is underway in Nairobi

The Kenya National Council for Science and Technology (NCST) on behalf of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology has been administering grants for Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I) since 1977. The main purpose of these grants is to support scientific research and technological innovation.

DR Kairo Awarded MBE by H.E. the President
Many years of hard work in the mangrove forests earn KMFRI researcher
coveted state recognition.
Dr James Gitundu Kairo has received the award of Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS). The
award conferred the Head of State, His Excellency President Mwai Kibaki, was announced in December,
2010. The order of the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear award was instituted by the
Government of Kenya after independence and is one of the highest civilian service awards granted by
the President of Kenya during Jamuhuri Day celebrations every December.
Informing Dr. Kairo that he is the recipient of this coveted award, the Director of KMFRI, Dr. Johnson Kazungu congratulated him for this great achievement. Dr. Kazungu said, “This award recognizes not only you for the excellent work you have done, but it also honours KMFRI for outstanding performance and distinguished services on the coastal and marine environment, the western Indian Ocean region and globally.”
Dr. Kairo said in response, “This award is in fact recognizing KMFRI and my fellow researchers working
on mangroves. Everything I have done for the coastal communities in Kenya and internationally has
been through, and on behalf of, KMFRI as well as the researchers and technicians I have worked with
since I joined the Institute”.
