LVEMP project – Environment and Fisheries Research in Lake Victoria continues
After the successful completion of LVEMP I, World bank accepted to fund the second phase LVEMP II which is designed to upscale the successful interventions of LVEMP I by strengthening both regional and national institutional capacity from managing shared natural resources.
Lake Victoria environmental management project (LVEMP) is a regional development programme that covers Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
The project will have four major components;
- Strengthening institutional capacity for managing shared water and fisheryresources.
- Point source pollution control and prevention.
- Watershed management.
- Project coordination and management.
There are various economic benefits that are expected to accrue from the project. From the first component they include; increased fisheries stocks, reduced cost of water supply, reduced transport cost, improved water quality thus improved health, recreational benefits, biodiversity benefits and wetland benefits. Health benefits are expected to come about from the second component arising from control of point sources of pollution. From the third component, non-point sources of pollution will be countered by the control of soil erosion by adopting sustainable water and soil management practices. The fourth component is expected improve the efficiency, economy and effectiveness of the investments proposed under components 1,2 and 3.It will also contribute to sustainability of collaborative management of transboundary natural resources beyond the programs’ closing date.
