Lake Naivasha expedition
Fish stocks of Lake Naivasha have experienced rapid decline in the past decade threatening the livelihood of low-income local community
who depend on this resource. Increased population growth within the lake region and its catchment area coupled with ready markets for fish in have provided huge demands for the fish, exposing the fishery to heavy exploitation.
The water quality characteristics and their potential influence on the fishery, the recent emergency of the common carp in the lakes fishery, resource use conflicts between different stakeholders and other issues in general call for provision of updated information on the lake.
The research scheduled for the year 2006/2007, will focus on the nature and dynamics of the lake ecosystem by providing detailed information on the characteristics of the lake water and evaluation of the sources and levels of nutrients currently blamed for increased phytoplankton growth, present status of the fishery which includes: recruitme
nt patterns of commercially important fish species, effect of crayfish on the submerged macrophytes and the potential fishery harvestable yield among others, and also focus on socioeconomic issues that affect the multiple uses of the aquatic resources from Lake Naivasha taking into account the views of the various stakeholders and the potential opportunities for the dependent communities. Information generated will be applicable in assisting the Fisheries Department in consultation with the other stakeholders in making important management decision on sustainable management of the lake.
