The first book on Kenya’s fisheries has been leased by the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI). The book, written by scholars from KMFRI, Kenya Fisheries Service (KeFS) and local universities provides the status of Kenya’s fisheries resources, their contribution to the Blue Economy and provides avenues for future expansion of the sector. In the past, fisheries have taken the periphery space in national economic discourse in Kenya. This is due to the perceived low contribution to the national economy compared to other food production sectors such as agriculture and livestock. The Blue Economy Initiative has rapidly changed this view by bringing forward the contribution of the renewable resources within aquatic environment and the potential contribution to the social and economic wellbeing, food security and industrial development of Kenya. Sound scientific information is the cornerstone for informed decision making towards achieving fisheries sustainability and continuous contribution to the economy. It is therefore important to maintain a high standard of research especially given the economic development needs facing Kenya’s fisheries sector, including implementation of the Kenya Blue Economy Initiative, which focuses on the utilization of available aquatic resources and spaces for accelerated and sustainable economic development. This Status of Kenya Fisheries (2018) provides an important milestone in the dissemination process of fisheries information. The aim of the book is to provide a national assessment of the status of fisheries and identify issues and opportunities, as well as challenges, towards enhancing sustainable development within the sector. The information presented in this book is structured in a simple way that can be useful to fisheries students, scientists, managers, the fishing industry, fish traders, consumers and the general public.
The book includes two technical chapters (1 and 2) that provide an overview of the current status of marine and freshwater fisheries respectively. An overview that provides the geographical and physical setting of the marine and fresh water bodies is provided at the beginning of each of these two chapters. Chapter 3 examines the legal and policy frameworks that govern the fisheries sector and the recent fisheries administration developments that took place in the recent past, particularly the implications of the new dispensation of constitution in 2010. Chapter 4 concludes with a brief review of the value of fisheries and the contribution of the sector to national economic development and to the National GDP, employment and food security and suggests the way forward in ensuring the relevance of fisheries to the national socioeconomic development. Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) will continue the production of this and other publications to continuously inform fisheries stakeholders on the status of the fisheries resources.
