I have worked on the benthic systems for over 7 years supporting different research teams studying the Kenyan critical habitats. I have skills in M&E, long-term trend analysis and marine biogeographic data management with OBIS and WoRMS. Before I left for studies, I was documenting the biodiversity of the marine benthic ecosystems and was investigating the use benthic foraminifera as indicators of ecosystem health in different marine habitats along the Kenyan Coast.

Currently, I am a Rising from the Depths PhD researcher for Ulster University, Coleraine, UK (as of May 2019) looking at marine cultural heritage of the East African coast for sustainable development. My topic will seek to define the interactions between fishery practices, traditional management and ecological conditions of coastal communities of Kenya and Tanzania (see https://risingfromthedepths.com/chepkemboi-labatt/). I look forward to mixing social science with contemporary science to achieve broader understanding of sustainable coastal fishing communities (see https://risingfromthedepths.com/thek-ea/).
