Frequently asked questions

1. What is Aquaculture?

  • Aquaculture is farming of aquatic organisms’ e.g. Fish, Molluscs, Crustaceans and aquatic plants with some sort of intervention in the rearing process to enhance production. This would include regular stocking, feeding and protection from predators

2. What are some of the practices used in aquaculture?

  • Monoculture: This refers to a culture of only one species in one holding unit at a time which can be done as mono-sex monoculture or mixed-sex monoculture.
  • Polyculture: This is the culture of more than one species in one holding unit at the same time. The species are selected such that they have different ecological requirements to reduce competition. A good example is the culture of the Clarias and Tilapia.
