KMFRI Enterprises Service Ltd (KES LTD)

Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute Enterprises Service –KMFRIES  was established on August 29th 2009 during the 64th Session of the KMFRI Board of Management. The aim of KMFRIES is to market the institute’s professional and other products. KMFRIES is set to mould and repackage the under-exploited opportunities in KMFRI and streamline them for revenue generation.

Location
The head office of KMFRIES is within KMFRI Headquarters in Mombasa and it is managed by the Business Development Manager. Other business development units are to be found in KMFRIs main branches at Kisumu, Turkana, Sangoro, Baringo, Naivasha, Kegati and Nairobi.

Staff Strength

KMFRIES believes in optimal use of diversified manpower to achieve her objectives. At KMFRI, KMFRIES has access to a well trained manpower with diversified skills. This is a great asset in business development, technological innovations and strategic thinking. KMFRI has a team of more than 90 are scientists, 127 technicians and technologists with some support staff who when  pooled together provide a dynamic, creative and productive work force capable of achieving high quality results in any assignment 

Skilled Manpower
KMFRIES shall utilize the highly qualified staff in KMFRI for revenue generation in a streamlined manner. Of the research staff, there are several PhD holders,  MSc and 21 BSc holders, supported by highly trained and skilled pool of technicians and technologists. The staff advantages for KMFRI lies in her highly trained, diversified and experienced research personnel who are able to handle scientific, technological and entrepreneurial challenges in multi disciplinary fields. This strength becomes handy at KMFRIES to fully exploit the potential.

Staff Distribution
Overall about a third of all staff are based in Mombasa, while Kisumu has 29%, Sangoro (11%), Kegati (8%), Baringo (7%), Naivasha (6%), Turkana (5%) and Nairobi (1%). KMFRIES shall give a chance to utilize staff in each of stations to fully exploit opportunities within their areas of strength to generate revenue along established revenue generation avenues.

Strategic linkages and collaboration
KMFRI has established a framework of collaboration and partnerships at the national, regional and international levels.

Collaboration at National level
KMFRI collaborates with universities, polytechnics and colleges, parastatal organizations, Government departments, foundations and Non-Governmental Organizations.

Collaboration at Regional level
At the regional level KMFRI has established collaborative research programs with WIOMSA, LVBC, LVFO, TAFIRI, FIRRI, IUC-EA, and IUCN, among other organizations.

International partners
KMFRI’s international partners include among others; the World Bank, European Union, IOC-UNESCO, FAO, IOI GEF, NORAD, UNEP, UNESCO, IFS, ILO, NBI and SIDA-SAREC.

Foreign Universities
A number of foreign universities have partnered with KMFRI for human capacity development. KMFRI scientists have received specialized and advanced training and other professional recognitions through this arrangement. Such strategic linkages offer KMFRIES a chance to utilize an array of exposes to achieve her goals.

Responsibilities of KMFRIES

The responsibilities of KMFRIES include but not limited to

  • Development of identified business areas and enterprises within KMFRI
  • Collection and safekeeping of revenue from marketed KMFRI goods and services.
Vision of KMFRIES

The vision of KMFRIES is ‘To promote and coordinate income-generating activities, leadership and expertise in resource mobilization for the benefit of KMFRI so as to reduce the institute’s dependence on the exchequer for development activities’.

Mission of KMFRIES

The Mission of KMFRIES is ‘To promote and engage in customer driven business activities related to aquatic and allied research for the benefit of KMFRI and its major stakeholders in the fisheries sector’.

Objectives of KMFRIES

KMFRIES is set up to address any or all of the following general objectives:

  • Promote, co-ordinate, and provide managerial services for income-generating activities within KMFRI
  • Develop an entrepreneurial culture at KMFRI
  • Harness the resources of KMFRI with a view to enhancing the institute’s research capabilities.
  • Provide managerial services for consultancy, research, production and other income-generating activities to the research centres, stations and research programmes of KMFRI.
  • Provide access of KMFRI expertise to society and population on a commercial basis.
Functions of KMFRIES

To realize its mission, KMFRIES is set to undertake the following functions:

  • Coordinating, promoting and marketing the activities of all income generating units in KMFRI
  • Developing new business units and opportunities
  • Enhancing delivery of community oriented professional services and consultancy.
  • Enhancing commercialization of research and development through linkage with industry, small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) and other bodies.
  • Establish collaboration with other institutions, agencies and organizations.
  • Developing and promoting commercial partners and alliances.
