ARK II aims to bring together scientists, managers and
stakeholders to discuss research and technological
advances with relevance to the management of both
freshwater and marine resources in Kenya.

Purpose
To share knowledge in aquatic research especially those related to fisheries management and aquaculture development with emphasis on food security, employment opportunities and poverty alleviation. This is in keeping with the mission of KMFRI to contribute to the management and sustainable exploitation of aquatic resources and thus alleviate poverty, enhance employment creation and food security through multidisciplinary and collaborative research in both marine and fresh-water aquatic systems.

Gaps in research and technological applications will be identified and recommendations made for enhanced partnerships between stakeholders in the application of research outputs.

  • Fisheries Research and Management Stock assessment, population dynamics, fishing effort
  • Aquaculture Research and Development Opportunities and challenges, national aquaculture stimulus programme
  • Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functions Status of species, habitats and ecosystems, trophic dynamics, water & sediment quality
  • Limnology and Oceanography Biogeochemical cycles, sea level change, mineral resources, circulation and numerical modelling
  • Climate change Impacts, mitigations and adaptation strategies
  • Contemporary Socio-economic issues Indigenous knowledge, Marketing, Resource comanagement , Gender and Health, Alternative
    livelihoods
  • Policy and Management Management tools (ICZM, MPA, BMU),
    monitoring, control and surveillance, legal and institutional frameworks

KMFRI to launches a new research vessel
The new modern KMFRI research vessel, MV Uvumbuzi, funded by the European Union through the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization. The vessel will be launched by Hon. Paul N. Otuoma, Minister of Fisheries Development, in Kisumu, on 4 June 2010.
