Organization Research
KMFRI has adopted a multidisciplinary programme approach in research based on six research programmes namely, Fisheries, Aquaculture research and development, environment and ecology, natural products and post harvest, socio-economics and information and data management. Two of these programmes namely fisheries and aquaculture are core programmes of the institute. Each programme is headed by a coordinator of which there are 12, six for each research division.
Aquaculture Research and Development Programme
The programme is responsible for investigating new and adoptive culture species and techniques for enhanced fish production in ponds, tanks, raceways, and through cage and pen culture. Similarly, the program undertakes studies on the following: integrated aquaculture production in irrigation systems,
- Appropriate seed (fingerlings) production
- Feed formulation and production,
- Hatchery development and operations techniques,
- Appropriate stocking levels for different production systems,
- Genetic and hormonal manipulation for increased fish production in aquaculture systems.
