Inland Waters Division - Aquaculture Research and Development Programme e
Mission of ARD Program
The mission of the ARD program is to contribute to the sustainable exploitation of aquatic resources, in¬creased farmed fish production, improved livelihoods, enhanced employment creation and food security through innovative and adoptive aquaculture research and technology transfer.
Linkages with other KMFRI Programs and Institutions
The aquaculture program works closely with other KMFRI research programs. Together, they undertake studies on sustainability and conservation of aquatic biodiversity, fish food
production and safety and value addition of fish products for increased value and shelf life.
ARD program collaborates with local, regional and global organizations in the field of aquaculture. In collaboration with institutions of higher learning, the program participates in capacity building through student project attachment besides providing information to schools.
Research Stations/Centers
Aquaculture research and development is carried out in three KMFRI stations. These are Sangoro and Kegati Aquaculture Research stations. Although not an aquaculture station, Kisumu Centre also has an aquaculture facility.
The role of ARDP in fish farming
Works closely with small scale subsistence and commercial fish farmers and other stakeholders in providing them with information on establishing and managing profitable aquaculture ventures. The program has sev¬eral such partnerships across the country.
The Program undertakes studies on integrated aquaculture, seed production, feed formulation, hatchery devel¬opment and operations, cage culture, production systems research and genetic improvement for increased fish production.
Specifically the program provides several services and products including
- Affordable feeds formulated from locally available materials
- Quality fish seed

Where to get help?
The Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) has two stations solely for aquaculture research and development at Sangoro, Kegati and an aquaculture facility at Kisumu Centre. These stations carry out research and provide technical advice on aquaculture. Additional information can be obtained from KMFRI headquarters in Mombasa.
You may also get some help from other aquaculture development institutions around the country.
